Greece has long been considered one of the Mediterranean countries with some of the best cuisine. What are the typical foods from Greece?
The country is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and delicious food. There are many Greek dishes that are unique to the region, such as moussaka, souvlaki, spanakopita, dolmadakia, and bougatsa.
Greece is famous for its seafood, especially fish. In addition to the usual suspects like octopus, shrimp, and calamari, you can also taste some less common items like sea urchins and mussels.
I enjoyed these fresh and festive dishes in a variety of restaurants, mostly on the island of Kefalonia. This fantastic place is one of the Ionian Islands, which are located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea.
Most of the Greek menus I have seen combine ingredients such as olive oil, garlic, tomatoes, onions, oregano, basil, lemon juice, feta cheese, olives, capers, and anchovies. This recipe features some of these flavors in a delicious pasta dish.
Greek cuisine is very diverse because of its location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The country has a rich culinary tradition dating back thousands of years, and for me, it’s very impressive the sensation of tasting the history or the culture of this beautiful country in these plates.
My favourite Greek food:
You definitely have to taste moussaka. It is typically made with eggplant, tomatoes, onions, meat such as lamb or beef, and cheese. There are many variations of the dish, depending on where it originates. But the Kelafonian version, I think, is the best one, having potatoes instead of rice.
I was surprised by the Greek feta cheese. I knew before that it was very popular in the country and world wide, but I wasn’t ready to taste that Greek feta cheese on my salad.
Feta cheese is made from sheep milk, and it comes in two varieties: fresh and dry. Fresh feta is usually eaten at room temperature, whereas dry feta is stored in the refrigerator.
Fresh feta cheese is better for cooking because it melts well. Dry feta cheese is easier to store and lasts longer. If you want to enjoy both types of feta cheese, try mixing them together.
